How to Edit a PDF Online for Free (Change Text, Sign, or Edit It Like Word)

Someone sends you a PDF with the wrong date in the second paragraph. Or your resume needs a new job at the top. Or a form wants a tick, a name, and a signature before tonight. In every case you need to change the PDF itself, not print it, not retype it, and not hunt for the Word file it came from.

Edit PDF handles all three. You can fix a single line so it looks untouched, or open the whole document and rewrite it the way you would in Word. Here is how each one works and when to use it.

Two ways to edit: on the page, or as a document

Page editing is for precise changes. Every page stays exactly as it is, and you work on top of it: change a line, add a note, sign at the bottom. Nothing else moves.

Document mode is for real writing. It opens the whole PDF as one flowing document, so you can type freely, and lines and pages rearrange themselves around your words, just like a word processor.

  1. Fixing a name, date, price, or a couple of lines: page editing
  2. Signing, ticking boxes, highlighting, or leaving comments: page editing
  3. Rewriting paragraphs, adding sections, or reworking a letter or resume: Document mode

Change existing text so it looks untouched

Open your PDF, pick Edit text, and click the line you want to change. Type your new words. They take the size, colour, weight, and style of the original line and sit in exactly the same place, so the page reads as if it was always written that way.

Want it bolder, bigger, or a different colour? The style bar above the page changes it in one tap, and Undo takes you back a step at any time.

Rewrite the whole PDF in Document mode

Select Document mode at the top of the editor, and your PDF opens as a clean set of pages you can type straight into. Add a sentence and the rest of the paragraph shifts along. Write a long section and it carries over to the next page on its own. A page counter and word count sit at the top, and spell check underlines typos as you go.

The toolbar will feel familiar if you have ever used Word or Google Docs. Forms, tables, and two-column pages keep their exact layout inside Document mode, and you can still click any word on them to change it.

  1. Fonts, sizes, bold, italic, underline, and text colour
  2. Left, centre, right, and justified alignment, plus line spacing
  3. Bullet lists, indents, and page breaks
  4. Add a blank page or remove one you no longer need

Sign, fill in, and mark up

Choose Sign to draw, type, or upload your signature or initials. Place it, resize it, and it stays saved, so the next page that needs it is one tap away.

For forms, drop a check mark or a cross on each box and use Add text for names, dates, and reference numbers. For reviews, highlight, underline, or strike through a sentence, draw an arrow to the part that matters, and pin a note with your comment. Whiteout cleanly covers anything that should not be there.

Just as easy on a phone

The editor fits a phone screen properly. Tools sit along the top with clear labels, anything you select gets its own Duplicate and Delete buttons, and your finger can type, draw, sign, and move things just like a mouse. Document mode works on a phone too, so a quick fix on the go is a real option.

Private by design

Your PDF stays on your device the whole time you edit, and nothing changes until you press Download. The free plan covers PDFs up to 25 MB and 100 pages, which is plenty for contracts, resumes, forms, and school papers.

FAQ

Can I edit a PDF without Adobe Acrobat?+

Yes. Edit PDF runs in your browser on any computer or phone. You can change existing text, rewrite whole pages in Document mode, sign, and fill in forms without installing anything.

Will the edited text match the rest of the page?+

Yes. When you click a line, the editor keeps its size, colour, weight, and style, and picks a matching font, so your change blends in with the text around it.

What is the difference between page editing and Document mode?+

Page editing changes things on top of the page and leaves everything else exactly where it is. Document mode turns the PDF into a flowing document, so text rewraps and moves across pages as you write.

Can I add a new page?+

Yes. In Document mode, add a blank page at the end or insert a page break wherever your cursor is. You can remove a page there too.

Is it free?+

Yes. The free plan covers PDFs up to 25 MB and 100 pages, and the downloaded file has no watermark.
