Step-by-step guide
How to Convert Files Online Free
Any file to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, or images
Universal Converter is PDFTrusted’s all-in-one file conversion hub. Upload a PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, image (including iPhone HEIC), HTML page, or email (.eml / .msg), then pick a Convert-to card — Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, PNG or JPG images, Markdown, archival PDF/A, or searchable OCR PDF. PDF to Office uses the same layout-aware cloud engines as our dedicated convert tools, with Basic for digital PDFs and Advanced OCR for scans. Image ↔ PDF steps can run privately in your browser for speed; cross-format and Office conversions use encrypted cloud processing with automatic file purge.
Step 1 — Upload your file to Universal File Converter
Open Universal File Converter from PDFTrusted and you will see the upload screen shown here — the same layout you get in the live tool, with the orange drop zone and Select button.
You can add files in two ways: click Select file (or Select files) and choose from your computer, or drag files from your folder and drop them onto the dashed orange area. On phones and tablets, tap the button to pick from your gallery or files app.
Supported formats for this tool: PDF (.pdf), DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PPT, PPTX, JPG / JPEG photos, JPG / JPEG photos, JPE, JFIF, PNG images, GIF images, BMP images, WebP images, AVIF, TIFF scans, TIFF scans, HEIC, HEIF, HIF, DNG, CR2, CR3, NEF, NRW, ARW, ORF, RW2, PEF, SRW, RAF, RAW, ICO, HTML (.html, .htm), HTML (.htm), EML, MSG. If a file type is not listed, export it to a supported format first — for example save Word documents as PDF before merging.
After a valid file is added, the workspace moves to the options step automatically. If you see an error, check the format and file size (limits are listed at the bottom of this guide).
Step 2 — Choose your Universal File Converter options
Once your file is loaded, the main options panel appears — this is what you use to control the result. The screenshot matches the real sidebar and controls in the workspace.
Read each option below before you click the action button. Picking the wrong preset is the most common reason people need a second attempt — especially with compression, split modes, and security settings.
When you are satisfied with your choices, press the primary action button (Universal) and wait for processing to finish. Most files complete in seconds; long scans or many pages take longer.
Step 3 — Download your finished file
When processing completes, you see a success screen with a green checkmark and a download button — exactly as in the screenshot.
Click Download to save the new PDF (or ZIP of files) to your device. The file goes to your usual Downloads folder unless you chose another location.
Use Process another file or Start over to run the tool again without refreshing the page. You can share the downloaded file by email, upload it to a portal, or open it in your PDF reader — the same as any file you save locally.
We do not store your document on our servers after browser processing. Keep your own copy safe; we cannot recover a lost download.
Privacy — browser-based processing
Universal File Converter on PDFTrusted runs in your browser on your device whenever the tool supports on-device execution. In that mode, your document is processed on your own device — it is not uploaded for that step.
We apply a encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS), access controls, and short retention for cloud jobs across our platform. Short retention for cloud jobs — When a tool uses cloud-assisted processing, uploaded files are handled only to complete your request and are automatically deleted within two hours. We do not keep a personal document library of your uploads. Always use a trusted device and network for sensitive material.
Works in the browser on phone, tablet, and desktop — no install required. No installation is required — open the tool, process, download, and close the tab to clear in-browser working data for that session.
Keep a backup of originals. Delete downloads from shared computers when you are finished.
Universal File Converter — file size & page limits
The Universal File Converter workspace is designed for everyday documents in your browser. These are practical limits — not marketing numbers — so you know what to expect before you start.
Maximum file size: about 40 MB per PDF (or per file where noted).
Maximum pages: about 100 pages per PDF for most page-based tools.
Standard PDF limits apply in the browser workspace.
If your file exceeds these limits, split or compress it first, or process it in smaller parts.

Common questions
What files can I convert with Universal Converter?
Upload PDF, Word (DOC/DOCX), Excel (XLS/XLSX), PowerPoint (PPT/PPTX), images (JPG, PNG, WEBP, HEIC, HEIF, GIF, BMP, TIFF, and more), HTML (.html / .htm), or email (.eml / .msg). Convert-to options depend on the source — for example PDF offers Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PNG/JPG, Markdown, PDF/A, and searchable OCR PDF; Office and images can go to PDF and other formats via PDF when needed.
How accurate is PDF to Word / Excel / PowerPoint?
Born-digital PDFs (exported from Word, Google Docs, InDesign, etc.) usually keep headings, paragraphs, and simple tables with high fidelity in Basic mode. Scanned or photographed pages need Advanced OCR — without it, output can be empty or garbled. Complex multi-column magazines, irregular merged tables, and math equations may need a quick review in Office after download. Always preview critical contracts and financial tables at 100% zoom.
When should I choose Basic vs Advanced OCR?
Use Basic for digital PDFs with a real text layer. Use Advanced OCR for scans, faxes, phone photos of documents, and older archives. Advanced uses more Pro credits and takes longer, but it rebuilds selectable text before Office export — essential for scanned invoices and contracts.
Is the file converter free?
Browser paths such as PDF to PNG/JPG and images to PDF stay free on supported devices. Cloud conversions (Office ↔ PDF, PDF to Word/Excel/PowerPoint, Markdown, PDF/A, OCR PDF, HTML/email to PDF) use Pro or trial credits. There is no watermark on standard downloads.
Can I convert HEIC photos from iPhone to PDF or Word?
Yes. HEIC/HEIF uploads are normalized for conversion. Convert to PDF in the browser, or continue to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Markdown, PDF/A, or searchable OCR PDF via secure cloud steps.
Can I convert Word to Excel or Excel to PowerPoint?
Yes. Cross-format Office conversions run through a PDF intermediate automatically (for example Word → PDF → Excel). Layout fidelity depends on the content — tables convert best when they are clear grids; free-form Word prose will not become a perfect spreadsheet.
Does converting reduce quality or change my layout?
Conversion maps one format’s structure into another — it is not a pixel-perfect screenshot. Text and simple tables are typically excellent. Decorative multi-column layouts, forms with checkboxes, and equations may need touch-ups. PDF to image (PNG/JPG) preserves visual appearance page-by-page when you need a visual archive.
Is it safe to convert private documents?
PDFTrusted uses encrypted transport (TLS) and AES-256 protected cloud workers for cloud steps. Cloud files are purged automatically after processing. Browser image↔PDF paths can stay on your device. We do not sell your documents or use them to train public models. See our Privacy Policy.
Can I convert HTML or email to PDF?
Yes. Upload an .html / .htm file for HTML to PDF, or .eml / .msg for email to PDF. For live web pages by URL, use our dedicated URL to PDF tool.
What is searchable OCR PDF?
Searchable PDF adds a text layer under the page image so you can find, copy, and index content — ideal for scanned archives and compliance packs. Choose the Searchable PDF card from a PDF or image upload.
Can I convert PDF to JPG or PNG?
Yes. Pick PNG images or JPG images to download a ZIP of page images. This runs in your browser on supported devices — fast and free.
Do I need a separate tool for PDF to Word?
No. Universal Converter includes PDF to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with the same engines as the dedicated tools. Use dedicated pages if you prefer a single-purpose landing for SEO bookmarks; Converter is the fastest hub when you switch formats often.
Why did my scanned PDF convert with blank or broken text?
Basic mode reads the existing text layer. Scans often have none — switch to Advanced OCR and reconvert. Cleaner, flatter scans (good lighting, less skew) improve OCR accuracy.
Which formats are best for archival or government uploads?
Use PDF/A for long-term archival when agencies require it. Use searchable OCR PDF when reviewers must search scanned packets. Compress PDF afterward if the portal has a strict size limit.
