PDF Editing and Protection — Redact, Watermark, Repair, Protect, and Unlock
The right tool for the right edit — with clear boundaries on what belongs to redaction, protection, or repair.
"Edit PDF" means five different things
Some users want to change a typo. Some want to permanently remove confidential text. Some want to add a watermark. Some just need to unlock a file they legally own. Some are trying to open a damaged download.
Each of those is a different workflow with different risks. This page groups them so you can pick the correct tool the first time instead of the closest one.
Content and layout edits
For small overlays and cosmetic corrections.
- Add text and shapes — overlay editable text, lines, and rectangles on any page. Font family, size, and color are configurable.
- Watermark — add a repeating text or image watermark with opacity, rotation, and position controls. Ideal for confidential drafts and licensed materials.
- Crop PDF — trim page margins uniformly across the document. Useful for removing scanner shadows and improving reading on tablets.
- Change text color — recolor existing text to improve accessibility or brand consistency.
- Metadata editor — update title, author, subject, and keywords stored inside the PDF file. These fields drive search results in document management systems.
Security and redaction
For anything involving confidential or sensitive information.
- Redact — permanently remove text and images (not just cover them with a black rectangle). True redaction rewrites the file so the removed content cannot be recovered by copying, exporting, or opening the PDF in a different reader.
- Protect PDF with password — add owner and user passwords with configurable permissions (print, copy, edit).
- Unlock PDF — remove a known password from a file you legally own. Locked files where you do not have the password cannot and should not be broken — that would violate our terms of service.
- Flatten PDF — merge form fields, annotations, and signatures into the base page so downstream tools do not accidentally edit them.
Repair and recovery
For files that arrived damaged, incomplete, or in an insecure format.
- Repair PDF — fix files that show as corrupt, refuse to open, or display damaged errors. Common causes include interrupted downloads, incomplete email attachments, and outdated exporters.
- Sanitize PDF — strip JavaScript, form actions, and embedded objects that could be exploited for phishing.
- Linearize PDF — optimize for fast web viewing so browsers can display the first page before the whole file downloads.
Redaction is not a black rectangle — please read this section
The most common data leak in the industry is a 'redacted' PDF where the black boxes are drawing objects sitting on top of the original text. Copy-paste, or opening the file in another PDF reader, reveals every word.
PDFTrusted's redaction tool actually removes the underlying content, then re-renders the affected page region. If you deal with sensitive documents — legal, medical, HR, or government — please use true redaction, from any provider, not shape-based coverups.
Legal and ethical use
PDFTrusted's editing tools are intended for documents you own, created, or are explicitly authorized to modify. Do not use them to alter contracts, invoices, official records, or identity documents in ways that misrepresent facts or infringe on someone else's rights. Continued misuse violates our terms and may be reportable to the relevant authorities.
File handling and privacy
Watermarking, cropping, metadata editing, protecting, and unlocking run locally in your browser. Redaction and repair may use secure server processing when a file exceeds in-browser memory limits; those files are auto-deleted within one hour and never used for training or advertising.

Questions & answers
No. That is one of the most common causes of accidental data leaks. Anyone can move the rectangle or copy the underlying text. Use the real Redact tool, which removes the content and re-renders the page.
No. Unlocking a file you do not own or do not have permission to open is prohibited by our terms of service. The Unlock tool is intended for owners removing a password they already have.
Protect adds password-based access control. Flatten merges annotations and form fields into the base page so they cannot be edited or removed. Many workflows use both together before sharing final files.
Repair recovers most files where headers or cross-reference tables are broken. Truly incomplete downloads (missing the last chunks) may not be recoverable.
